As a filmmaker and documentarian, Yuelei yearns for stories that mean something. For stories that not only represent marginalized communities with complexity and dignity (that is to say: to reflect the world as it already is), but that also imagine a future where we all thrive. Their debut film, “Happy Birthday, You Made It” (2022) - an intimate portrait of how an older queer woman navigates memory, loss, and love in the context of her own loneliness - made its world premiere at NFFTY, the largest youth film festival in the world, and its Los Angeles debut at Outfest Film Festival, one of the largest LGBTQIA+ film festivals in the world. Their most recent film “Still Queer” (2023) made its film festival premiere at Outfest Fusion 2023 and CAAMFest, the nation’s largest showcase for Asian-American and Asian films.
Currently, they work as a video journalist at Business Insider, making short-form documentaries for “Risky Business,” a show that examines how certain industries and jobs operate at a high human cost as workers face extremely hazardous, unjust, and unregulated conditions.
As a first-generation queer nonbinary Chinese director and writer, their films are intimate portraits of complicated relationships and emotional visuals.
